Introduction

We belong to Gudigars community. Gudigars are a smallcommunity and mainly depended upon fine arts for making a living. We are traditionally spread in Karnataka, Maharastra and Goa with overall around population of 3000.

We Gudigars are naturally inherited great artistic talents. Our ancestors practiced art for livelihood and provided support the other communities and local temples with wood and stone carving, paintings for different occasions including temple chariots and deities, Baasinga (head gears used for bride and groom during Hindu weddings), clay Ganesha, Durga idols during many Hindu festivals, pith flowers and garlands.

We are mastercraftsman in sandalwood (Santalum album, Srigandha), ivory, shivane and other woods. Some of our ancestor’s masterpieces can be witnessed in Mysore palace, Karnataka Legislative assembly, Victoria and Albert museum, London and the Dantha Simhasana (ivory throne) is installed at Sri Ramachandrapur Math at Hosanagar (Karnataka).

Our family is mastered in the carving of statues of gods and goddesses, caskets, fans, jewellary boxes, phot frames, jungle scene panels, manatapas in sandalwood and wooden momentos for various organizations and companies.
